FRANCIS PLAGNE (MELBOURNE)
I.RYOKO
francispHR_enigol-1.jpg
Francis Plagne is a Melbourne-based musician and songwriter whose work engages with both popular and experimental musics. His solo recordings have been released by Synaesthesia, Mistletone, Nervous Jerk, Breakdance the Dawn and Albert's Basement and have been exhibited at Gertrude Contemporary Art Space and Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart. His music has been described as sounding as ‘close to Pet Sounds era Beach Boys as it does a musique concrète future classic or an exercise in folk collage’ (Mess + Noise) and as the ‘unlikely amalgam of Antonio Carlos Jobim's samba and an Andre Breton poem’ (ThreeThousand). He has performed as part of the 2009 Melbourne International Arts Festival and the 2005 and 2009 What is Music? Festivals.
i.ryoko's grand return to Fred's after spending the last few months living in caves in India.

MAD NANNA
FULL FCKING MOON
TLAOTLON
MAD NANNA are a new group from Melbourne currently featuring Michael Zulicki (guitar), Pat O’brien (guitar), Ian Wadley (drums), Samaan Fieck (bass) and Jesse Dimmick (violin), interested in story telling and improvisation. Focused around the awkward but propellant song structures of guitarist Michael Zulicki, the band capture in a fragile web of sound the DIY simplicity of Moe Tucker, the psychedelic outsider folk-pop of Pip Proud and the existential otherness of Jandek.

With special support from:

FULL FCKING MOON
Genre-embracing cosmic ensemble of Droszkhi (Torben Tilly, guitar & electronics), Riffkah (Bek Coogan, guitar & vocals), Tooth (Andy Wright, drums) and Yorishiro (Dan Lucka, bass) radically fuse elements of many to create the sensational self-coined 'Shaggs of neolithic heavy metal disco'.

TLAOTLON is the solo electronics project of Wellington's Jeremy Coubrough (Orchestra Of Spheres, Marineville, Mandrake) - a psychedelic sound world of swirling vortexes and convoluting loops, taking a side-step down the rabbit hole of post-detroit techno and new-age deep listening sessions.

Nightschool with Victoria Parsons

In 2009, sound artist Victoria Parsons travelled around Argentina with her friend, photographer Tammy Williams. The trip was, at times, an isolating and uncomfortable experience. The two documented their experiences with photographs and sound recordings, and created and exhibition of sound and images called Disjunct, which was installed at Thistle Hall in February. On Monday Vic will present her ideas about making the work and share her experiences of traveling in Argentina.

Night School with Daniel Beban on sleep, spinning, pilgrimages and soundless music ...
Come prepared for a full body experience as Daniel presents new sound installations, participatory compositions and field recordings.

Sound Explorers Night School   7pm KOHA
ANNEA LOCKWOOD (NZ/USA) - Mapping the Danube

Although Annea Lockwood was born in New Zealand, she left these shores in the early 60s to study composition in London. It was upon seeing a La Monte Young performance at Darmstadt, where the composer dragged a chair around the room, that the world of sound really opened up for Annea. During the 60s she wrote some seminal pieces including Piano Transplants in which defunct pianos were burned, drowned, beached, and planted in an English garden, and the Glass Concerts, large scale performance pieces utilizing scraps of glass of all shapes and sizes to produce a strange universe of sound. She has continued her exploration of sound since the 60s, and much of her work in the past three decades has focussed on environmental sound recordings, most importantly her work with rivers.

Lockwood has lived and worked in upstate New York for many years, and it is a rare and very special opportunity to have her in New Zealand for a brief visit. She'll be presenting an installation as part of the Adam Art Gallery's Commons Project, at Peter McLeavey Gallery, 147 Cuba St, Wednesday 27 April, 11am-5pm, Free entry.  Entitled The Sound Map of the Housatonic River the installation articulates her fascination with the multi-layered complexity of sounds created by fast flowing rivers. Presenting an alternative sonic map this work traces the course of the Housatonic River, from the sources in the Berkshire Mountains to the river’s mouth at Milford, Long Island Sound. The piece follows the river by recording both the surface and underwater sites of the riverbed, in turn alluding to the inevitable changes that are occurring to the natural environment.

On Monday 25th, she will give a special presentation at Fred's, exploring her work 'A Sound Map of the Danube' - a massive project that took place over many years, recording the length of the Danube River in Europe. She will discuss the concepts behind the work, her history of working with rivers, the process of recording and composing and creating the installation.

Thanks to Alt Music and Wellington Creative Communities for support this night school presentation.
